Oktoberfest at The Delaunay Counter

Every autumn, millions gather across Europe to raise a stein, enjoy Bavarian delicacies, and embrace the lively spirit of Oktoberfest. While the world’s most famous beer festival has its roots in Munich, the tradition has spread far and wide – including to London, where The Delaunay Counter is bringing a slice of Bavaria to the heart of the city.

The History of Oktoberfest

The origins of Oktoberfest date back to 1810, when Munich celebrated the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which featured horse races, beer, and music. The celebration proved so popular that it became an annual tradition, evolving into the world-renowned 16–18 day festival we know today.

Over time, Oktoberfest became synonymous with hearty Bavarian food, traditional folk music, parades, and, of course, beer served in giant one-litre steins. Today, it draws millions of visitors from around the world to Munich’s Theresienwiese.

How Oktoberfest is Celebrated in Germany and Austria

In Germany, Oktoberfest remains most famously celebrated in Munich, with enormous beer tents hosted by historic breweries, oompah bands, fairground rides, and thousands dressed in lederhosen and dirndls. Traditional Bavarian dishes such as roast chicken, sausages, pretzels, and strudel accompany the endless flow of Märzen beer, brewed specially for the occasion.

In Austria, the celebrations are more intimate but equally joyful. Many towns and villages host their own versions of Oktoberfest, where Austrian breweries showcase local beers alongside regional delicacies such as schnitzel, goulash, and apfelstrudel. The atmosphere is rooted in gemütlichkeit – a warm sense of togetherness, comfort, and celebration.
